Noradrenergic α2 receptor: A promising central target for urolithins

Veronica Torre, Guendalina Olivero, Alice Taddeucci, Nicole Rosenwasser, Federica Turrini, Raffaella Boggia, Anna Pittaluga · FENS Forum 2024

Ellagic acid (EA) is a polyphenol that contributes to the nutraceutical properties of pomegranate. In the brain it was reported to control noradrenaline release. Recently, we demonstrated that EA binds α2 receptors (α2R), mimicking the full-agonist clonidine. The study was extended to Urolithins (URO) A, B and C which represent the main metabolites of EA in mammals, following a chronic (14 days) administration of an EA micro-formulation (EAm).“In vitro” studies were carried out on cortical and hippocampal synaptosomes isolated from control mice acutely exposed to the UROs, clonidine and yohimb

Role of central amygdaloid alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the modulation of anxiety in the rat

Miguel Perez de la Mora, Juan Carlos Mondragon-Hernandez, Luis Angel Cruz-Montesinos, Minerva Crespo-Ramirez, Daniel Alejandro Palacios-Lagunas, Dasiel Oscar Borroto-Escuela, Kjell Fuxe · FENS Forum 2024

It is commonly recognized that amygdala plays a critical role in the modulation of anxiety. Furthermore, alpha-2 adrenergic receptor activity has been suggested to be involved in anxiety modulation. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether the central amygdaloid nucleus, which represents the main anxiogenic output of amygdala is involved in such adrenergic actions. Elevated Plus-Maze and Shock-Probe-Burying paradigms were used to study the effects of sterotaxically-infused clonidine, a specific alpha 2 adrenergic agonist on anxiety.
