The DFG invites projects for HALO 2028 under Infrastructure Priority Programme SPP 1294. Funding can run for up to three years from 2028, covering atmospheric and Earth system research connected to upcoming HALO aircraft missions or data from previous missions. Themes include aerosols, clouds, precipitation, atmospheric transport, chemical composition and coupling processes. This lecture examines the hierarchy of clouds, filaments and dense cores from which stars form. Gravity competes with turbulent motions and magnetic support before collapse produces a young star and surrounding disk. Observations from space telescopes and millimetre arrays connect these processes to the earliest stages of planetary systems.
