Achyrocline satureioides protects against neuronal dopaminergic damage in the Caenorhabditis elegans model of Parkinson’s disease

Patrícia Pereira, Peterson Alves Santos, Pricila Pflüger, Ionara Rodrigues Siqueira, Jose Angel Fontenla · FENS Forum 2024

Achyrocline satureoides aqueous extract (ASAE) protective effects were evaluated on dopaminergic neurodegeneration induced by reserpine in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Strain BY200 was cultured following standard procedure. The worms (L1 stage) were exposed to the treatments, ASAE (10 or 25 mg/ml) or no for 24 hours, followed by the induction of dopaminergic damage (reserpine, 60 µM, positive control; PC) or no (negative control; NC). Worm’s images (n=20) were captured using a fluorescence microscope and quantified using the ImageJ software. The locomotor behavior (body bends) of the w

The central role of hypothalamic circuits for anti-Parkinsonian effects of acupuncture

Ju-Young Oh, Hyowon Lee, Sun-Young Jang, Hyunjin Kim, Geunhong Park, Almas Serikov, Jae-Hwan Jang, Junyeop Kim, Seulkee Yang, Moonsun Sa, Sung Eun Lee, Young-Eun Han, Tae-Yeon Hwang, Sharon Jiyoon Jung, Hee Young Kim, Seung Eun Lee, Soo-Jin Oh, Jeongjin Kim, Jongpil Kim, Thomas J. McHugh, C. Justin Lee, Min-Ho Nam, Hi-Joon Park · FENS Forum 2024

Despite clinical data stretching over millennia, the neurobiological basis of the effectiveness of acupuncture in central nervous system disorders has remained elusive. In this study, using an established model of acupuncture treatment in Parkinson’s disease (PD) mice, we show that peripheral acupuncture stimulation activates hypothalamic melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) neurons via nerve conduction. Moreover, we identify two distinct neural pathways originating from anatomically and electrophysiologically distinct MCH neuronal subpopulations, projecting to the substantia nigra and hippocam

IL-13Rα1 and Parkinson's disease: Investigating pathological connections

HyunHee Park, Young Cheul Chung, Jeongyeob Baek, Won-Ho Shin · FENS Forum 2024

Due to its association with the chromosomal region PARK12, Interleukin-13 receptor alpha 1 (IL-13Rα1) is anticipated to play a role in the pathology of Parkinson's disease (PD). Elevated IL-13 levels within the substantia nigra (SN) during chronic stress, coupled with the expression of IL-13Rα1 in dopaminergic neurons, suggest their potential involvement in neurodegenerative processes. However, the role of IL-13Rα1 in the pathological state of PD remains unclear. We investigated IL-13Rα1 expression patterns in postmortem brain tissues from PD patients and age-matched controls using western blo
