Targeted single-cell ablation uncovers network homeostasis of sound representations in mouse cortex

Takahiro Noda, Jens-Bastian Eppler, Matthias Kaschube, Simon Rumpel, Eike Kienle, Yonatan Loewenstein · COSYNE 2023

Sensory cortices maintain robust sensory representations despite an inevitable loss of neurons during aging and even during the prodromal stages of neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanisms that safeguard sensory representations and provide the cortical network with robustness against the loss of neurons are largely unknown. Here, we tested in how far the targeted elimination of functionally identified neurons affects the dynamics of sound-evoked population responses and could trigger homeostatic processes at the network level. We combined longitudinal two-photon calcium imaging of p

The impact of CA2 E/I imbalance on social behaviour and network activity

Alessa A. Franz, Tudor Ionescu, Dennis Kätzel, Bastian Hengerer · FENS Forum 2024

Disturbances in the neuronal activity of the hippocampal CA2 subregion have been shown to result in impaired social memory in rodents. However, the current assessment of behavioural role of CA2 within the circuit of cognition relies on classical tests, presenting only a snapshot of the behaviour of subjects. As both clinical and preclinical data have revealed a relevance for CA2 in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, it is crucial to uncover the effects of CA2 E/I imbalance in more natural social environments over longer periods of time. Furthermore, gaining a deeper understanding of
