Reconstructing ocean life: metagenome-assembled genomes in marine research

Samuel Miravet-Verde · ETH Zürich

Fri, Oct 9, 2026 · 10:00 UTC

This webinar examines reconstruction and use of marine metagenome-assembled genomes. The first part introduces the Ocean Microbiomics Database as a standardized resource for prokaryotic genome-resolved analysis, including co-abundance-based reconstruction, contextual metadata, and relationships between ecological patterns and microbial genomes. The second part considers why eukaryotic genomes are harder to recover: their complexity, low abundance, and limited markers and reference sequences complicate assembly and classification. Participants will compare reconstruction approaches, explore the

Towards a Theory of Microbial Ecosystems

Pankaj Mehta · Boston University

Fri, Dec 10, 2021 · 14:00 UTC

A major unresolved question in microbiome research is whether the complex ecological patterns observed in surveys of natural communities can be explained and predicted by fundamental, quantitative principles. Bridging theory and experiment is hampered by the multiplicity of ecological processes that simultaneously affect community assembly and a lack of theoretical tools for modeling diverse ecosystems. Here, I will present a simple ecological model of microbial communities that reproduces large-scale ecological patterns observed across multiple natural and experimental settings including comp
