Heterodimerization and interaction of the serotonin receptors 5-HT1A and 5-HT2C

Imandra Kempe, Michael Koch, Olivia Andrea Masseck · FENS Forum 2024

G-Protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are among the most prominent receptors in the central nervous system. Their malfunction is implicated in various neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, making them a common target for medical treatment. Thus, it is crucial to gain a comprehensive understanding of GPCR functions and mechanisms to develop more effective and targeted medical treatments with fewer side effects. This study examines the potential interplay between the serotonin receptors 5-HT1A and 5-HT2C, which play a significant role in the pathology of depression. sDarken: New developments of a genetically encoded serotonin sensor

Martin Kubitschke, Dennis Offterdinger, Vanessa Beck, Olivia Andrea Masseck · FENS Forum 2024

For decades, the molecule Serotonin is of interest not only but also because of its various functions within the brain. While the direct measurement of serotonin release in the brain is challenging, new genetically encoded sensors for serotonin opened new possibilities to measure release of serotonin in a high temporal and spatial resolution. Here we report the newest developments of one of these genetically encoded sensors for serotonin, called sDarken.Based on the initial published sDarken (Kubitschke et al. 2023) we now utilized mutagenesis, to develop a new color shifted variant which show
