On biological and cognitive autonomy

Matteo Mossio · Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne

Mon, May 30, 2022 · 17:00 UTC

In this talk I will introduce the central notions of the theory of autonomy, as it is being currently developed in biology and cognitive science. The theory of autonomy puts forward the capacity of self-determination of organisms as whole systems, and constitutes thereby an alternative to more reductionist and mechanistic approaches. I will discuss how the theory of autonomy provides a justification for the scientific use of notions as function, norm, agency and teleology, whose epistemological legitimacy is highly debated. I will conclude by describing the difficult challenges that poses the

Connecting structure and function in early visual circuits

Rudy Behnia · Columbia Zuckerman Institute

Mon, Mar 14, 2022 · 14:00 UTC

How does the brain interpret signals from the outside world? Walking through a park, you might take for granted the ease with which you can understand what you see. Rather than seeing a series of still snapshots, you are able to see simple, fluid movement — of dogs running, squirrels foraging, or kids playing basketball. You can track their paths and know where they are headed without much thought. “How does this process take place?” asks Rudy Behnia, PhD, a principal investigator at Columbia’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute. “For most of us, it’s hard to imagine a world

Brain Basics: A peak into the Brain!

Shruti Muralidhar · Deep Genomics

Tue, Feb 1, 2022 · 23:30 UTC

My talk will be a ’Neuro 101’ - also called ‘Basics of Neuroscience’. I hope to introduce the field of Neuroscience and give a brief glimpse into the function, history and evolution of the brain. I will guide you through questions such as - What is a brain? What are its basic building blocks and functions?

Mature retina is resilient to partial photoreceptor loss

Felice Dunn · UCSF

Mon, Nov 8, 2021 · 13:00 UTC

I will discuss recent findings from our lab about the effects of partial photoreceptor loss on the retinal circuit’s structure and function. I will relate this work to the question of whether the visual system can distinguish between changes in light level and photoreceptor number.
