Cortical-hippocampal interaction in the context of memory task

Francesco Battaglia, Morgane Audrain, Jeroen J Bos, Federico Stella · FENS Forum 2024

Memory consolidation involves the spontaneous activity of multiple brain areas potentially supporting the reprocessing of novel and more remote memories. Traditionally, study of these phenomena has focused on a handful of brain areas, such as hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex. Here, we are currently investigating how wider cortical networks support memory reprocessing. We are doing so by combining optical (wide-field) voltage imaging with laminarly-resolved hippocampal electrophysiology in mice, to get a large-scale view of the brain activity. Animals perform two virtual reality memory tas

Development of hippocampal-cortical interaction during sleep in pups

Morgane Audrain, Rafael Pedrosa, Federico Stella, Francesco Battaglia, Freyja Olafsdottir · FENS Forum 2024

The ability to lay down detailed and specific hippocampal-dependent memories and the capability to retain these over extended periods of time develops gradually . In mice, adult-like hippocampal-dependent memory starts to emerges ~3 weeks of age. Spatial representations (place, grid head direction cells) emerge with a similar timeline and so does memory replay, the spontaneous repetition of experience-related activity patterns. Memory replay is thought to be key to information communication between the hippocampus and neocortex. It is therefore important to assess the developmental timeline of
