Train/test behavioral cross-validation reveals neural correlates in mice

Miguel Angel Nunez-Ochoa, Fengtong Du, Lin Zhong, Scott Baptista, Carsen Stringer, Marius Pachitariu · COSYNE 2025

In systems neuroscience, animals are often trained until they saturate the psychometric function, producing stereotypical behaviors. This may obscure important system properties, such as generalization and neural correlates. In this study, we trained and tested mice on visual texture classification problems, where they needed to generalize at test time based on mid-level visual features. After learning, mice consistently discriminated the training stimuli at a high accuracy, while their performance on test stimuli varied systematically across categories. To determine a possible neural basis f

Predicting time across ages: Comparing performance of younger and older adults in a temporal prediction task

Marleen J. Schoenfeld, Rebecca Burke, Andreas K. Engel · FENS Forum 2024

Temporal prediction is the ability to anticipate the occurrence of events, and has been shown to optimize behavior, e.g., reducing reaction times. Recently, optimized behavior has been associated with a phase adjustment of ongoing neural oscillations aligning with the expected onset of upcoming stimuli. In ageing, there is some evidence that these mechanisms might be altered; however, findings are inconsistent. Thus, we aimed to investigate how anticipatory oscillatory markers of temporal prediction change with ageing, adapting a previously used temporal prediction task while measuring electro
