…hole perturbation theory, thermal quantum field theory correlators, quantum chaos and the SYK model. The focus is to investigate how boundary correlation functions encode physics behind the black hole horizon and, more ambitiously, the physics near singularities, a subject drawing considerable recent attention. Participation is by application; SCGP workshop talks are open to the public.

…Random quantum Hamiltonians, the quantum variants of these models, show phenomena such as quantum chaos, entanglement growth and holographic dualities that remain poorly understood. This IPAM workshop convenes mathematicians, physicists and computer scientists to map the state of the art, formulate open problems and chart new directions.

…in billiards, spectral geometry and quantum chaos, along three axes: the classical and quantum mechanics of billiards, spectral analysis on manifolds of large geometry, and high-energy eigenfunctions towards quantum chaos. These areas have seen an impressive amount of progress in the last decade, often in isolation. The workshop aims to let the participating communities share new ideas, foster collaborations and develop new approaches to long-standing open problems of importance to both mathem

Quantum chaos and the complexity of time evolution

Vijay Balasubramanian · University of Pennsylvania

Vijay Balasubramanian connects quantum chaos with the complexity of time evolution. One approach bounds the smallest circuit needed to simulate physical dynamics; another measures how quickly and ergodically a state explores its accessible Hilbert space. Examples from spin chains, billiards, many-body systems and random matrices distinguish chaotic and integrable behaviour. Applications address geometric conjectures for complexity in quantum gravity and possible failure of effective field theory near spacelike singularities.
