High and low frequencies of binge-like ethanol exposure in rats disrupt mGluR-LTD in hippocampus slices in a bidirectional way: Role of mTOR

Margot Debris, Chloé Deschamps, Mickaël Naassila, Olivier Pierrefiche · FENS Forum 2024

Binge drinking (BD) is characterized by consuming at least 70 g for men and 56 g for women of pure alcohol within two hours. Clinical studies examining the impact of BD on memory in young adults have revealed impairments across various types of memory (episodic, visuospatial, working memory...), although the frequency of BD often varies among studies. Preclinical research indicates that BD leads to the degradation of glutamate-dependent synaptic plasticity, the cellular mechanism of learning and memory in the hippocampus, including the metabotropic form of glutamatergic long-term synaptic depr

Role of mTORC1 on prefrontal inhibitory plasticity during memory consolidation

Magdalena Pereyra, Christoph Schmidt-Hieber, Brice Bathellier · FENS Forum 2024

Memory consolidation is an essential process for our everyday lives. Memory representations are initially encoded in the hippocampus before being consolidated in the neocortex by synaptic plasticity processes that depend on protein synthesis. Within prefrontal cortex (PFC), inhibitory interneurons are critical in gating incoming hippocampal inputs and shaping pyramidal neuron responses. However, how molecular pathways affect synaptic signaling during memory consolidation is unclear. We hypothesize that mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin Complex 1 (mTORC1), a central regulator of protein synthesis
