Behavioral impacts of simulated microgravity on male mice: Locomotion, social interactions and memory in a novel object recognition task

Jean-Luc Morel, Margot Issertine, Thomas Brioche, Angèle Chopard, Laurence Vico, Julie Le Merrer, Théo Fovet, Jérôme Becker · FENS Forum 2024

The effects of spaceflight are induced by three concomitant factors: poor social interactions in a reduced living space, microgravity, and the radiation bath. To understand how these parameters can influence behaviors, animal studies are being carried out, modelling each of these parameters independently or not of the others. These studies allow to challenge different strategies of countermeasures to prevent spaceflight multisystemic deconditioning. In the NEBULA project, we developed an original suspension system that allows interaction between 2 conspecifics, to tackle the effects of microgr

Exercise partially prevents motor alteration induced by early sensorimotor restriction in rats

Mélanie Van Gaever, Orlane Dupuis, Julien Girardie, Jacques-Olivier Coq, Erwan Dupont, Marie-Hélène Canu · FENS Forum 2024

Most children with developmental coordination disorders have sensorimotor impairments and reduced physical activity, which can lead to cognitive and motor disorders. On the contrary, physical activity is widely known for its beneficial effects on the body, especially during childhood. Indeed, physical activity is essential for the development of the neuromuscular system, allowing the acquisition of coordination and increasingly precise movements during the first years of life. In order to better understand the effects of atypical sensorimotor experiences during childhood, a model of early sens

Impact of social isolation on cognitive and motor functions in aging male mice

Rowena Simon, Madlen Haase, Julia Lindner, Fabienne Haas, Christiane Frahm · FENS Forum 2024

The global demographic shift towards an aging population raises concerns about the increasing prevalence of social isolation (SI) among older adults, a concern further highlighted by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. SI is associated with an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment, exacerbating the global health issue of age-related cognitive decline. Research on the effects of SI in older animals is limited. However, in humans, the negative effects of SI become more pronounced with age, with a particularly strong effect on males. Our study examines the impact of SI on cogn

Stratification of ALS progression by a combined motor and behavioural tracking approach for preclinical drug validation

Hanna Trebesova, Francesca Bacchetti, Matilde Balbi, Tiziana Bonifacino, Massimo Grilli, Marco Milanese · FENS Forum 2024

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor neuron death, leading to motor paralysis and cognitive and behavioural disorders. In clinical trials, ALS patients are stratified by disease stage, whereas in preclinical studies, animals are recruited based solely on age, neglecting individual disease progression. Additionally, both ALS onset and progression are influenced by sex, a factor often mirrored in animal models. This mismatch might contribute to the frequent failures of translating preclinical data to clinical success, suggesting the impo
