Conditions for sequence replay in recurrent network models of CA3

Gaspar Cano, Richard Kempter · Bernstein Conference 2024

The hippocampal formation plays a key role in learning and memory, with CA3 thought to be the substrate of pattern completion [1]. However, its underlying computational and synaptic mechanisms are not yet understood. Here we analyze the mechanisms behind sequence replay through simulations of spiking neurons and a time-discrete model of moving membrane potential distributions. First, we simulated spiking networks of excitatory leaky integrate-and-fire cells forming a sequence of assemblies. The sequence contains both recurrent and feedforward connections (within and across assemblies, respect

Optimizing Trajectories via Replay in a Closed-Loop Spiking Neuronal Network Model of Navigation

Masud Ehsani, Sen Cheng · Bernstein Conference 2024

Experimental studies have demonstrated that spontaneous task-independent replay of sequences encoding a learned route during sharp-wave–ripple (SWR) events can be beneficial for consolidating path memory [1] and discovering new behavioral strategies, such as forming novel space-action representations, finding shortcuts, and integrating and associating different routes[2]. Additionally, It has been shown experimentally that hippocampal theta sequences, generated during active exploration of the environment, play a crucial role in selecting appropriate actions in goal-directed tasks[3,4].
