Circulating microRNAs as biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease

Nina Hempel, Dennis Krüger, Tonatiuh Pena, Susanne Burkhardt, Anna-Lena Schuetz, Farahnaz Sananbenesi, Andre Fischer · FENS Forum 2024

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder leading to age-associated dementia. For the first time in the last 20 years causative therapeutic strategies are on the horizon. However, since changes in cognitive function develop slowly over time in these patients, they are often diagnosed at an advanced stage of molecular pathology, a time point when causative treatments fail. Thus, there is great need for the identification of inexpensive and minimal invasive approaches that could be used for screening with the aim to identify individuals at risk for cognitive decline th

Circulating microRNAs and isomiRs as biomarkers for the initial insult and epileptogenesis in four experimental epilepsy models – The EPITARGET study

Epilepsy prevention is an urgent and global unmet need today. Particularly, in structural epilepsies that may occur months or even years after an epileptogenic insult (e.g., stroke, tumor, trauma, or status epilepticus), this latency time provides a window for preventive treatments for individuals at risk of developing epilepsy. In this regard, the identification of biomarkers to detect the subgroup of individuals with an increased risk of epilepsy after the epileptogenic insult is essential for the development of preventive treatments.A multicenter study was conducted using four different mod
