Spinal cord stimulation is a promising therapy for the recovery after spinal cord injury and control of movement. However, the complex interaction between electrodes and neural reaction impedes more effective neuromodulation. Empirical knowledge and manual adjustment are playing dominant role for the tuning of neuromodulation parameters. The growth of electrode array’s complexity also brings new challenges to find optimal stimulating configurations. Developing a more efficient way to predict the stimulation results and explore the optimal therapy is necessary for the tuning of sensitive neural

High-frequency, sinusoidal bursts activate nerve fibers in the earthworm

Philipp Schnepel, Eva Severijnen, Yamiral Bezwork, Nicoló Rosetti · FENS Forum 2024

Figure 1: High-frequency burst stimulation (left) triggers compound action potentials (CAP, right inset) in the medial giant fiber of the earthworm.Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) are a cornerstone of modern bioelectronic interventions aiming at providing targeted therapies for various conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy or chronic inflammation. Standard neuromodulation approaches mostly use mono- or bi-phasic pulses with varying amplitudes and intervals to deliver electrical stimulation to peripheral nerves via mono-, bi-, or tri-polar electrodes to

State dependent neural correlates of motor impairments in Parkinson’s disease

Burce Kabaoglu, Elisa Lilly Garulli, Matthias Endres, Christoph Harms, Nikolaus Wenger · FENS Forum 2024

The freezing of gait (FOG) is a debilitating symptom of Parkinson’s disease (PD), which is resistant to dopamine replacement and deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapies, thus it is a clinical and scientific challenge. Modern DBS devices can record brain activity from chronically implanted electrodes, and animal models can be used to investigate motor network impairments at different biological scales. The combination of these tools posits a plethora of opportunities to identify gait-related biomarkers to improve gait therapy using closed-loop DBS in patients. Towards this goal, my PhD project a
