Correlated Excitatory \& Inhibitory Noise Mitigates Hebbian Synaptic Drift

Michelle Miller, Christoph Miehl, Brent Doiron · COSYNE 2025

Strongly interconnected neuronal populations are thought to be a substrate for memory in the brain. Dynamic connectivity relies on plasticity rules to adjust synapses, enabling learning and neural circuit formation. Networks with only excitatory synaptic plasticity can become unstable due to runaway excitation, compromising a circuit's ability to store memories. To counter this, homeostatic synaptic plasticity of inhibitory connections provide a matched negative feedback that stabilizes neural activity and any associated learning. In this study, we outline the conditions under which recurrent

We present a stochastic dynamics theory and analysis framework for studying a continuous time transparent visual game for pairs of agents we call continuous perceptual report (CPR) tasks. The CPR task is a pattern recognition task where subjects view a moving random dot pattern with a time-dependent veridical direction of motion and variable coherence. The task is transparent in that each subject receives information about the current estimate of the other. The difficulty of this type of task depends on the coherence and noise level of the stimulus, on the accessibility of information from the
