…precise, reproducible targeting with transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS). Romain Duprat demonstrates the dedicated functions introduced in visor2 version 2.9: calibrating a transducer, creating its target, adjusting beam settings for the three-dimensional transducer representation, and performing target sonication. The session connects treatment planning and targeting with subsequent session review and data export, showing how the software supports the workflow from initial preparation through post-session analysis.

Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is a non-invasive neurostimulation modality capable of targeting deep brain regions with high spatial resolution. Despite its growing popularity, there is still a need to investigate the direct effect of its focused mechanical waves on the activation of the neuronal populations in specific brain areas in addition to the role that each of its physical parameters plays in this process. For this purpose, we have used fluorescent calcium imaging with fiber photometry to visualize the changes in the neuronal activity upon stimulation with tFUS. Fiber photometr

The effects of 40Hz ultrasound stimulation on neuronal function

Deniz Tonyali, James Jiang, Konoha Izaki-Lee et al. · FENS Forum 2024

Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) targets deep brain areas by non-invasively administering low intensity ultrasound through the brain with a high spatial resolution (Zhang et al., 2021). Previous results indicate that stimulating neural cells at specific pulsing frequencies is neuroprotective (Manippa et al., 2022). We were therefore interested in determining whether a similar approach could be taken with focused ultrasound stimulation. To this end, we prepared acute rat hippocampal slices and exposed them to 40Hz pulsing ultrasound for 1hr. Following a proteomics screen, we noted an incr

Neuromodulation with DBS and FUS: Ephys effects in an animal model of depression

Lisa Ratz, Sofia Drakopoulou, Artur Fornol et al. · FENS Forum 2024

…In recent years transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) at low intensities has been emerging as another form of stimulation. However, challenges arise from skull absorption, necessitating lower frequencies and therefore resolutions. To address this, we report on the first steps in a co
