Understanding the Mysteries of the Cell: How Do Many Cell Types Arise From One Genome?

Stephen Quake · D. Phil. Lee Otterson Professor. Bioengineering and Physics, Stanford University

Mon, May 12, 2025 · 15:00 UTC

Stephen Quake explains how different cell types use a shared genome in different ways. Single-cell transcriptional profiling provides a route to mapping this diversity. The lecture describes a human atlas containing over a million cells from 24 tissues and organs, resolving hundreds of cell types and tissue-dependent patterns of gene expression.

Microenvironment role in axonal regeneration- looking beyond the neurons

After an injury in the adult mammalian central nervous system, lesioned axons fail to regenerate. This failure to regenerate contrasts with the remarkable potential of axons to grow during embryonic development and after an injury in the peripheral nervous system. Peripheral sensory neurons with cell soma in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) switch to a regenerative state after nerve injury to enable axon regeneration and functional recovery. Decades of research have focused on the signaling pathways elicited by injury in sensory neurons and in Schwann cells that insulate axons as central mechanisms r
