ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterised by the loss of motoneurons (MNs). Some MNs present a lower vulnerability to the disease, including neurons of the oculomotor system (OCM), compared to other cranial MNs (facial or hypoglossal). Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has shown the ability to protect MNs from degeneration. Overexpression of VEGF is involved in neuroprotection and delayed neurodegeneration of MNs. We have previously described a higher amount of VEGF in the extraocular neurons in control adult rats. The objective of this study in the murine SOD1G93A A

Peripheral nerve injury is an important health problem that threatens public health. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a biocellulose (BC) conduit and a biocellulose conduit impregnated with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on peripheral nerve regeneration. Biocellulose derived from Gluconacetobacter xylinus cell culture was impregnated with 0.2 µm/ml VEGF and formed into conduits. Unilateral 8-millimeter rat sciatic nerve defects were repaired using biocellulose conduit, VEGF-impregnated biocellulose conduit, and an autograft. Walking analysis was conducted at sp

The potassium-chloride cotransporter KCC2 is the main extruder of Cl- in neurons. Reduction of KCC2 levels disturbs the polarity and amplitude of postsynaptic inhibitory potentials induced by GABA and glycine. Motoneuron axotomy induces KCC2 downregulation, which seems to recover with target reinnervation. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that neurotrophic factors might play an important role in regulating KCC2 levels. In this context, we provided axotomized extraocular motoneurons with VEGF or BDNF to determine whether these factors influence the lesion-induced KCC2 downregulation. Adult rats w

Every three seconds, someone suffers a stroke, a major contributor to global mortality and disability. Stroke survivors often face limited treatment options and significant disabilities. Stem cell therapy holds promise for brain regeneration and functional recovery, yet it's hindered by poor graft survival post-transplantation due to the hostile stroke environment. Our goal is to enhance graft survival and regenerative potential through cell acclimatization using sublethal hypoxic preconditioning or functionalized, compressible cryogel microcarriers. A protocol for obtaining injectable cryogel

Glioblastoma (GBM) tumors rely on neovascularization, driven by specific tumor signals that stimulate endothelial cell (EC) proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Moreover, extracellular vesicles (EVs) has emerged as a key mediator in tumor angiogenesis. This in vitro study assesses glioblastoma-derived EVs' (GD-EV) potential in endothelial cell remodelling (ECR). Glioblastoma cell (U87 MG) conditioned media, treated with the chemotherapeutic drug, Temozolomide (TMZ), EV inhibitor (GW4869), or TMZ+EV inhibitor, were incubated with endothelial cells, HUVEC. Dose-& time-dependent stu
