Workshop

23rd International Workshop on Computational Physics and Materials Science: Total Energy and Force Methods

About

The Total Energy workshop covers recent progress in electronic-structure methods and their applications. Held in Trieste roughly every two years since the 1980s, it is one of the main meetings of the international ab initio electronic-structure community. The 2027 edition gives a broad view of recent developments, current challenges and future directions through invited talks and focused sessions on novel energy functionals, time-dependent and out-of-equilibrium phenomena, data-driven and machine-learning methods, multi-scale modelling and solid-liquid interfaces, materials design and discovery, and quantum computing. It includes poster sessions and the award ceremony for the Walter Kohn Prize for pioneering contributions to computational materials science, co-funded by ICTP and the Quantum ESPRESSO Foundation. There is no registration fee, and a limited number of grants support selected participants, with priority for participants from developing countries.
