Walter Benjamin Programme

Independent postdoctoral research funding, normally for up to two years, with rolling applications. Research in Germany is funded as a position; research abroad is funded as a fellowship under additional German-research-system eligibility rules. The programme generally requires a change of institution and host support for the project and career development. Researchers based in Austria can apply for the German position route.

Early-career postdoctoral researchers. The German position route is open to researchers abroad irrespective of nationality or previous German employment. Funding outside Germany requires prior integration into Germany’s research system; additional education, residence and host-tenure limits apply. A German host declaration is needed for the position route.
