About
Funding for researchers developing an independent, innovative project that advances understanding of human life, health and wellbeing or develops methods and tools for health-related research. The award supports scientific skills, research networks, responsible research and the transition to an independent programme.

Eligibility
Covers: Applicant salary plus up to GBP 400,000 in research expenses, with specified excluded cost categories outside that limit; usually five years.
Through 28 October 2026 at midnight GMT: eligible administering organisations in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or low- and middle-income countries other than India and mainland China. From 29 October 2026: eligible administering organisations in the UK and low- and middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia; consult Wellcome’s definitive country list. Host organisations must be not-for-profit higher-education institutions, research institutes or healthcare organisations.
Applicants need a completed PhD or equivalent research experience and normally no more than three years of postdoctoral research experience, with adjustments for career breaks, part-time work and substantial changes of discipline. A sponsor and mentor support the award; normally at least 80% of research time must support the project.
