About
A two-year UCAR fellowship supports independent climate and global-change research hosted by a mentoring scientist at a US university, research institution or federal agency. Research may address climate variability and impacts, Earth-system modelling, freshwater and ocean processes, carbon and biogeochemical cycles, energy and decarbonisation, or coupled human–Earth systems. Physical, social and integrated scientific approaches are eligible. Annual salary is USD 82,650.
Fellows become UCAR employees with benefits and receive relocation and travel/publication allowances. They participate in programme seminars and a biennial summer institute. Advance agreement with a host is required. Work must be performed in person within the fifty US states; US territories and remote appointments are excluded. Applications are due by 23:59 Mountain Time on 16 October 2026.
Requirements
A relevant PhD completed before the fellowship starts; the application instructions require completion and defence by June 2027. Preference is given to first-postdoc applicants within three years of the PhD. US citizenship is not required; awardees normally change institutions. Submit one PDF with personal statement, CV, original research proposal and host materials, and provide two reference contacts. UCAR can sponsor H-1B status only for applicants already in the US in H-1B or another status allowing an in-country change; new overseas consular H-1B sponsorship is unavailable.
