About

The newly established lab of Professor Jeffrey Barrett, jointly affiliated with the ELLIS Institute Finland, the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki, recruits a doctoral researcher in computational genomics for predictive medicine. The lab analyses multiomic data to discover, understand and measure mechanistically meaningful molecular subtypes (endotypes) of complex human diseases, drawing on national biobanks with matched biosamples and electronic health records, growing genomic, proteomic, metabolomic and transcriptomic datasets, and machine-learning models that stratify disease risk, progression and treatment response.

The doctoral researcher designs and carries out a PhD project in this area, collaborates with the ELLIS Institute and international partners, and shares results through publications, preprints and open-source software. The team has access to biobank datasets covering about 2 million individuals (FinnGen, UK Biobank, All of Us, Estonian Biobank) and to local supercomputing and cloud resources. The fixed-term position lasts up to four years with a six-month trial period; the starting salary is typically about €2,600–2,850 per month.

Applications are due by 19 November 2026.

Requirements

Master's degree in computational biology, data science, bioinformatics or a related discipline (exceptional candidates coming straight from a bachelor's may be considered); programming for data analysis in Python or R; research experience in computational biology and/or data science; excellent English. Apply with a one-page cover letter in the applicant's own voice, a CV (with publications and GitHub link where applicable) and two references.
