About
The Faculty of Science and the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), HiLIFE, at the University of Helsinki invite applications for a joint (50:50) research fellow (university researcher) position in AI for population health and genomics, a fixed-term appointment of up to four years starting as soon as possible. The position belongs to the Sustainable Wellbeing Across Lifespan (SWAN) research action, which studies individual risks and susceptibilities, mechanisms of degeneration and remodelled metabolism across the lifespan.
The fellow develops an independent programme of methodological innovation in AI for large-scale biomedical data, for example foundation models for longitudinal electronic health records and genomics, multimodal learning that integrates health records with molecular data, causal representation learning, in-context learning and amortized inference for healthcare decision-making, and AI-assisted scientific discovery workflows. The work is done with the Ganna Lab at FIMM and the Probabilistic Machine Learning groups of Acerbi and Klami in the Department of Computer Science, members of the ELLIS Institute Finland, with access to nationwide Finnish health records covering more than five billion healthcare events, FinnGen genomic data on over 500,000 participants, multi-omics datasets and CSC/LUMI computing.
Teaching may take 5–10% of annual working time. The monthly salary is €4,800–6,000, with a six-month probationary period. The closing date for applications is 16 November 2026.
Requirements
Doctoral degree and typically 2–4 years of postdoctoral research in artificial intelligence, machine learning or computational statistics, with demonstrated interest in population health and/or human genetics; publications in top AI/ML venues (e.g. NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR) and/or clear AI contributions in leading biomedical journals; evidence of independent research contributions and ideally of group leadership, funding acquisition and public engagement.
