About
Academy Research Fellowship funding from the Research Council of Finland supports early-career researchers on fast career tracks, helping them increase their competencies and make significant progress towards the most demanding research positions and an established place in the national and international research community. Funded projects advance the researcher's career and competence and produce high-quality, innovative and ambitious research, with the wider aims of strengthening and renewing research expertise in Finland and integrating high-level researchers into Finnish research communities. The four-year funding, for 1 September 2027 to 31 August 2031, can cover the applicant's salary, the salary costs of a possible research team and other research costs, up to a maximum of €700,000; the Research Council of Finland funds up to 70% of the total costs and the site of research covers at least 30%. Funded researchers primarily work in Finland but may spend periods at foreign universities. The call is open to all research fields and closes on 11 November 2026 at 23:59 Finnish time.

Eligibility
Covers: Four years (1 Sep 2027–31 Aug 2031), up to €700,000, covering the applicant's salary, salary costs of a possible research team and other research costs; the Research Council of Finland funds up to 70% of total costs.
Funded researchers primarily work in Finland at a Finnish site of research (host organisation), which co-funds at least 30% of total costs and must commit within 14 days of the call closing; periods of work at foreign universities are possible.
Nationality or residence: Funding respects the equal treatment of researchers regardless of nationality.
Individual researchers whose first doctoral degree certificate is dated between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2024; earlier degrees are considered only for special reasons (pregnancy or parental leave, childcare leave for a child under 3, military or non-military service, or long-term illness) that caused a long-term career break. Applicants must not hold a permanent senior research position (career stages 3 or 4, such as professor, assistant/associate professor or research director); fixed-term tenure-track staff may apply. The site of research in Finland must commit to the application within 14 days of the call's closing date. Current four-year Academy Research Fellows may apply only in the last year of their post. In the winter call only one application per applicant is considered across Academy Project funding and Academy Research Fellowships.
