About
The Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO) of the University of Oulu, which operates internationally recognised geophysical measurement networks and research infrastructures for space weather, the near-Earth environment and Arctic geophysics, recruits a doctoral researcher in space physics within the Research Council of Finland-funded SafeEarth research programme. Space weather driven by solar activity disturbs Earth's upper atmosphere and magnetic environment, creating natural hazards that are especially pronounced at high latitudes.
The doctoral researcher analyses observations from SGO's measurement networks, focusing on auroral imaging and related geophysical data, studies the physical processes linking aurora and space-weather impacts in the near-Earth environment, contributes to understanding of space-weather hazards and their implications for society, and collaborates across the multidisciplinary SafeEarth consortium. The position is based on the University of Oulu's Linnanmaa campus and is fixed-term for three years from 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible, at levels 2–4 of the Finnish universities' scale with a starting gross salary of about €2,600–3,200 per month.
Applications are due by 30 November 2026 (23:59 Finnish time).
Requirements
A degree in space physics, physics, astronomy, atmospheric sciences, data science, geophysics or another relevant field, meeting the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) admission requirements by the start of doctoral studies; the right to study for a doctoral degree is applied for at the beginning of employment.
