Doctoral Training: Mathematical Statistical Physics School

About

A two-week doctoral training school at the Les Houches School of Physics presenting advances in mathematical statistical physics over the last twenty years, following the Les Houches summer schools on the subject held in 1984 and 2005. Topics include random geometry, disordered systems and graph theory, together with dynamical systems and cellular automata, sandpile models and theoretical ecology and evolution. The programme comprises six five-hour lecture courses (each split into four 1h20 sessions of teaching and exercises), fifteen one-hour invited talks, six thirty-minute contributed talks and a large-audience talk. Lecture courses: Thierry Bodineau, a renormalisation-group perspective on functional inequalities; Hugo Duminil-Copin, the Ising model on cubic lattices; Alison Etheridge, natural selection in spatially structured populations; Ivailo Hartarsky, kinetically constrained models; Piet Lammers, the Kosterlitz–Thouless transition and links between the XY model and height functions; Christian Maes, response and fluctuation theory for steady non-equilibria. The school is primarily intended for doctoral and master’s students, postdocs and other younger researchers, though applications from more experienced researchers are also considered; non-invited participants are expected to stay for the whole school, and non-permanent researchers apply with a CV and a motivation and/or recommendation letter. Fees for the two weeks are €500 for students and €700 for permanent researchers, with limited support possibly available for accommodation.
