About

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility's Margaret Butler Fellowship in Computational Science is a postdoctoral fellowship for high-impact research at the intersection of AI for science and high-performance computing, aimed at broadening domain science in leadership-class computing. The fellow pursues a self-directed research programme proposed in the application, using ALCF resources such as the Aurora exascale supercomputer and AI accelerators in the AI Testbed, and works with multidisciplinary science teams.

The appointment is for one year, renewable for another, with a professional allowance; the expected hiring range is $85,781–$142,968. A hybrid schedule with up to about 40% remote work is possible. Application materials are due by 5 February 2027, 5 pm CT (the fellowship may extend this deadline); review starts 8 February 2027 and appointments can start in summer or fall 2027.

Requirements

Ph.D. (within the last 0–5 years, or by appointment start) in applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science or a similar field; knowledge of high-performance computational science; experience with at least one AI-driven approach such as distributed foundation-model development and fine-tuning, agentic AI orchestration, surrogate models, AI for autonomous laboratories or multimodal AI. Application: a research proposal of up to 4 pages for a 1–2 year self-directed programme and a CV that explains the candidate's contribution to each work, links refereed papers, datasets and a public code repository, and lists supervisors and projects.
