About

Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Propulsion and Power department seeks a postdoctoral appointee to run multi-physics, multi-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of heavy-duty internal combustion engines on high-performance computing systems. The work covers multi-phase flows, fuel injection and spray-wall interaction, fuel-air mixing, turbulent and abnormal combustion (knock, pre-ignition), heat transfer and emissions for conventional and alternative fuels, developing physics-based and data-driven models within commercial and in-house codes alongside experimentalists, CFD experts and AI/ML specialists.

The role requires on-site presence in Lemont. The expected hiring range is $72,879–$121,465.

Requirements

Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically within the last 0–5 years) in mechanical, aerospace or energy engineering or a closely related discipline; experience simulating 3-D multiphase turbulent reacting flows (e.g. CONVERGE, OpenFOAM, Fidelity Charles, Ansys Fluent); understanding of fuel sprays, turbulence, chemical kinetics and combustion modelling. Preferred: alternative-fuel modelling, CAD geometry handling, C++/C/Fortran code development and parallel computing, and deep learning (TensorFlow, PyTorch).
