About

Prof. Dr. Sen Cheng's Computational Neuroscience group at the Institute for Neural Computation is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher within SFB 1280 "Extinction Learning" to develop quantitative spiking neural network models of hippocampal circuits for episodic memory and spatial navigation. The project asks how hippocampal sequences during sharp-wave ripples are generated and shaped by prior experience and neuromodulation to support memory consolidation.

Models are developed with experimental collaborators and validated against in vivo rodent electrophysiological and behavioural data; duties include deriving testable predictions, publishing and presenting results, and mentoring students. Full-time, fixed-term until 30 June 2029 (end of project), starting as early as possible; pay grade E13 TV-L where requirements are met. Applications close on 2 November 2026 (reference ANR 6176).

Topics

Requirements

Completed PhD in computational neuroscience, physics, computer science, cognitive science or a closely related field; strong quantitative background with demonstrated computational or mathematical modelling experience, preferably including biologically plausible or spiking network models; strong programming skills, preferably Python, with scientific computing and numerical simulation experience; independent research ability; excellent English. Software engineering practice, version control, HPC and reproducible workflows are advantages. Submit one PDF with cover letter, CV, bachelor, master and PhD transcripts and a research statement via the application link; emailed applications are not considered.
