About

The Department of Digital Humanities (Language Technology) at the University of Helsinki recruits full-time postdoctoral researchers for two projects, initially for two years with the possibility of extension. Know-AI (Explainable & Trustworthy AI for Global Threat Analysis) investigates what language models know and when they know it, developing explainable and trustworthy AI for detecting and analysing global threats such as disinformation in online media, with research on the interpretability, robustness and real-world safety of large language models.

DALAI-FIN / Revita develops AI-based tools for personalised second-language teaching of adults, such as migrants in Finland, which requires detailed learner modelling, learning analytics and continual assessment of learners' skills. The postdocs conduct foundational and applied research on explainability and trust in language models, develop methods to evaluate and interpret how LLMs detect and represent threats, implement algorithms and data analysis (PyTorch, JAX, transformers) and publish at leading AI/ML/NLP venues, working with an international network of collaborators.

The starting salary is about €3,700–4,400 per month before taxes. The due date for applications is 24 November 2026.

Requirements

PhD (or imminent completion) in natural language processing, machine learning, computer science or a related discipline; experience with NLP, large language models and explainability; Python programming, ideally with PyTorch and Hugging Face Transformers; prior peer-reviewed publications; excellent English. One PDF with CV, a 1–2-page cover letter, degree transcripts and two referees.
