About

Penn State's Department of Physics seeks a postdoctoral research associate for two federally funded projects at University Park: the 2D Crystal Consortium (2DCC), an NSF Materials Innovation Platform user facility, and LATTICE (Layered and Thin Film Technologies with Intelligent Cloud Experimentation), an NSF Programmable Cloud Laboratory. The research centres on synthesising two-dimensional quantum materials by molecular beam epitaxy and characterising them in vacuo with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and a four-probe low-temperature nano scanning probe.

For 2DCC, the postdoc operates and maintains the MBE/ARPES/LT-Nano cluster tool for user projects; for LATTICE, the work integrates these capabilities into a cloud-lab ecosystem with in situ feedback and control, autonomous deposition, AI and machine-learning workflows, and sample-tracking data integration, in collaboration with vendors, AI researchers and data scientists. Review of applications began immediately and continues until the position is filled.

Requirements

PhD (by the appointment date) in physics, materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering or chemistry with experience in ARPES and/or MBE thin-film growth; experience operating ultra-high-vacuum deposition and cryogenic surface characterisation tools; publication record. Applications include a CV, publication list, research statement and at least three reference letters.
