Croonian Prize Lecture: Advances in computational protein design

David Baker · University of Washington; Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Tue, Nov 3, 2026 · 18:30 UTC

Natural proteins solve problems shaped by evolution. David Baker describes a different approach: designing proteins from scratch to meet current challenges in health, technology and sustainability. His laboratory develops deep-learning methods that generate proteins with new functions, synthesizes genes encoding the designs, and experimentally characterizes the resulting molecules. The lecture explains how this design-build-test approach extends beyond modifying existing natural proteins and presents applications of computational protein design to contemporary problems. This webinar explores computational and structure-based vaccine design, comparing prefusion stabilisation of vaccine antigens with epitope scaffolding onto non-antigen protein backbones. It discusses the advantages and limitations of both strategies. No background in computational protein design is required; familiarity with vaccine antigens and viral glycoproteins is helpful.
