In Astronomy and Astrophysics

This four-year NewPhysCMB appointment develops lattice simulations of scalar and gauge fields during inflation. Research includes nonlinear primordial density fluctuations, extension to non-Abelian gauge fields, chiral gravitational waves and simulated CMB and large-scale structure observables. The researcher will work with Eiichiro Komatsu and Drew Jamieson. The nominal start is 1 September 2027, with earlier starts possible.

A Journey Through Modern Cosmology: From Massive Simulations to AI Scientists

Paco Villaescusa · Center for Computational Astrophysics, Flatiron Institute

Paco Villaescusa examines how simulations and artificial intelligence change the extraction of physical knowledge from precision cosmological surveys. The talk asks how much information lies in large-scale structure beyond power spectra, including nonlinear scales and higher-order statistics, and introduces the Quijote and Backlight simulation programmes. It then addresses the uncertain astrophysical processes that complicate small-scale inference through CAMELS, a framework combining cosmology, galaxy formation and machine learning. DREAMS is presented as a route to predicting dark-matter obs
