Effects of atorvastatin-loaded PEGylated liposome on focused magnetic stimulation in post-stroke

Jihye Kim, Gangho Choi, Jahae Kim, Eun Sol Hwang · FENS Forum 2024

We investigated whether a synergistic effect would emerge in post-stroke treatment by opening the blood-brain barrier (BBB) with focused magnetic stimulation (MagStim) and delivering Atorvastatin-Loaded PEGylated Liposomes (LipoStatin). Two weeks after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) were injected at a concentration of 15mg/ml, followed by 30 minutes of MagStim. The procedure was conducted over a week with MagStim, and magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) were injected three times at two-day intervals. After MagStim, LipoStatin at 10mg/kg was administered intraven

Impact of olfactory food ingredients on emotional and digestive state

Clémence Viguier, Marie Bailly, Julie Thevenin, Laura Guiraud, Jean-paul Motta, Marion Allaoua, Virginie Noirot, Pierre Etienne, Nathalie Vergnolle, Bruno Guiard, Lionel Moulédous · FENS Forum 2024

Modification of the olfactory system can dramatically influence emotion and it is well accepted that mice with olfactory impairments develop pseudo-depressive symptoms (Yuan. M. et al, 2020) and microbiota dysregulation (Shuai-Ming Zhu et al, 2024). On this backdrop, our research is currently focusing on the therapeutic potential of exploiting the olfactory system in mood-related disorders. Different odors can exert anxiolytic and/or antidepressant-like effects in several depression models. To better understand the functional relationships between odors, emotion, microbiota and gut physiology

lncRNA Neat1 modulates infection-induced cognitive impairment

Pengfei Li, Yan Wu, Meng Liu, Hongkuan Fan · FENS Forum 2024

Severe bacterial infections affect more than 19 million people each year. With improved treatment strategies, more and more patients survive such severe bacterial infections. However, the majority of these survivors develop cognitive impairment and mental health problems. The pathogenesis of infection-induced cognitive impairment may include vascular injuries and neuro-inflammation, which eventually leads to neuron dysfunction. However, the mechanisms that promote cognitive impairment post infection remain largely unknown. We observed that mice exhibit hippocampus-dependent memory impairment p

Microglial metabolism and immune function are pivotal factors in sexual dimorphism in Alzheimer’s disease

Eoin O'Neill, Marie-Victoire Guillot-Sestier, Ana Rubio, Virginia Mela, Marina A. Lynch · FENS Forum 2024

Age and sex are major risk factors in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) with a higher incidence of the disease in females. Chronic microglial activation and dysregulated neuro-inflammation are features of AD and may contribute to disease pathogenesis in a sexually dimorphic manner. We investigated sex differences in microglia in the APP/PS1 mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease and in post mortem brain tissue from patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Here we report elevated levels of activated, iron-laden and dystrophic microglia in the cortex and hippocampus of female APP/PS1 mice, and in post mortem tissu
