Caffeic acid attenuates neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats: Pivotal role of the cholinergic and purinergic signaling pathways

Maria Rosa Schetinger, Milagros Fanny Vera Castro, Charles Elias Assmann, Naiara Stefanello, Karine Reichert, Tais Palma, Anielen Silva, Vanessa Miron, Vitor Mostardeiro, Vera Maria Morsch · FENS Forum 2024

The present study evaluated the effect of caffeic acid (CA) on behavioral learning and memory tasks in the diabetic state. We also evaluated the effect of this phenolic acid on the enzymatic activities of acetylcholinesterase, ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase, ecto-5-nucleotidase and adenosine deaminase as well as on the density of M1R, α7nAChR, P2X7R, A1R, A2AR, and inflammatory parameters in the cortex and hippocampus of diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal dose of streptozotocin (55 mg/kg). The animals were divided into six groups: control/vehicle;

Inflammasomes, M2 cells, long non-coding RNAs and nanoparticles: The four wheels of multiple sclerosis?

Aya Elhout, Mohamed Hamed, Ramez Reda Moustafa, Salma Tammam, Hend M. El Tayebi · FENS Forum 2024

Relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) hits around 85% MS patients. The main disease modifying therapies (DMTs) of this subtype are: Fingolimod (Gilenya), IFN-β A1(Rebif & Avonex), Teriflunomide(Aubagio), IFN-β 1B(β-feron) and Dimethyl Fumarate(Marovarex).The study aimed at: 1.Expression profiling of long non-coding RNA MALAT-1 in RRMS patients, MALAT1 knockdown and evaluating successful silencing of MALAT1 by specific siRNAs, 2.Expression profiling of Inflammasome components in RRMS patients and studying the impact of MALAT1-knock down on them, 3.Expression profiling of Calreticuli

Investigating neuroinflammation in the activity-based anorexia (ABA) model

Carlotta Siddi, Chiara Camoglio, Sabrina D’Amelio, Vittoria Spero, Raffaella Molteni, Maria Scherma, Simona Dedoni, Ida Nillson, Paola Fadda · FENS Forum 2024

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious eating disorder prevalently widespread in female subjects, characterized by a severe restriction of caloric intake, fear of becoming fat, dysmorphophobia and hyperactivity (DSM–5). Nowadays growing evidence shed light about the involvement of immunoinflammatory pathways in AN, considering the rise in the peripheral levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients (Solmi et al., 2015). Furthermore, neuroinflammation may be an additional characteristic of AN (Rahimian et al., 2021), since it has been observed in other psychiatric disorders. The Activity-Based A

LPS and pre-aggregated Abeta 1-42 lead to an increased neuroinflammatory response in cerebral organoids

Izaskun Itxaso, Tina Loeffler, Irene Schilcher, Magdalena Daurer, Stefanie Flunkert, Boris Philippe Chagnaud, Manuela Prokesch · FENS Forum 2024

Neuroinflammation represents a physiological response marked by immune cell activation and the release of inflammatory markers within the central nervous system. While it plays a pivotal protective role, when dysregulated it is also implicated in various neurological disorders such as Alzheimer disease. Brain organoids, self-organized three-dimensional (3D) aggregates derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), have emerged as a novel model to study brain development and disease. This study focuses on the development of a cerebral organoid model of neuroinflammation using pro and
