What's Next in Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Treatment

Charisse Winston · Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California

Wed, Nov 4, 2026 · 18:00 UTC

Charisse Winston and Alysa Kasen discuss approaches to detecting and understanding Alzheimer’s disease beyond amyloid alone. Winston examines neuronal extracellular vesicles in blood and saliva as potential accessible biomarkers, including their relevance to risk in underrepresented populations. Kasen explores how tau filament structure and post-translational modifications in its surrounding regions influence seeding competence and biological activity. Together the presentations connect molecular and structural mechanisms with earlier detection and the interpretation of tau-related neurodegene

This hands-on course focuses on analysing, interpreting and statistically evaluating quantitative proteomics data. Researchers with basic mass-spectrometry knowledge learn how stable-isotope labelling and label-free approaches support biological experiments, and how to select suitable hardware, software and analysis strategies. Computer-based practicals and group exercises develop skills for handling quantitative data, while lectures connect protein regulation, cellular communication, functional and chemical proteomics, and post-translational modifications. A dedicated session examines practic
