About
Four-year support for researchers from Black heritage backgrounds to develop a postdoctoral research career in the UK, combining research funding, mentoring and career development. The programme covers natural sciences, including biomedical sciences, physics, mathematics and engineering; clinical and interventional human research, social sciences and humanities are excluded. Awards are expected to start between 1 October 2027 and 1 January 2028. Applications close at 15:00 UK time on 18 November 2026 and require UK host approval through Flexi-Grant.

Covers: Four years, up to GBP 703,800 for salary and associated costs, research expenses and training. Salary and eligible overheads are generally funded at 80%; research expenses at 100%. Justified relocation and visa costs for the fellow and dependants may exceed the standard cap.
Host location: United Kingdom
An eligible UK host is required. Applicants must have the stated UK nationality, study or postdoctoral connection.
Nationality or residence: UK nationality or the specified UK study/postdoctoral connection is required. Black heritage eligibility also applies.

Applicants must identify as Black heritage, including the specified mixed Black backgrounds, and be UK nationals or have completed part of a UK undergraduate, masters or PhD degree or held a UK postdoctoral position. A PhD must be completed by the fellowship start; final-year doctoral applicants may apply with supervisor support. Less than 24 months of full-time postdoctoral experience is permitted at the deadline, with career-break adjustments. An eligible UK higher-education, research-council, nonprofit research or public-sector research host is required; permanent posts are ineligible.
