UK partner university, with at least 18 months at an Africa or Asia partner institution

About

Five CREATE doctoral fellowships support practising health professionals developing clinical academic careers in global health. The Wellcome-funded programme links five UK universities with six partner institutions in Ghana, Pakistan, South Africa, The Gambia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Research may span biological mechanisms, methods and technologies, or population health and its social, ethical, cultural and economic contexts, addressing health problems relevant to the overseas host region.

Fellows register at a UK partner university and spend at least eighteen months at an Africa or Asia partner institution with paired supervision. The three-year award covers salary, research costs, home-rate tuition fees, training and travel. Salary is £45,728–£76,582 annually pro rata inclusive, matched to professional circumstances. The programme starts in September 2027. Stage-one applications close on 8 November 2026 at 23:59 GMT; invited stage-two proposals are due on 16 March 2027.

Requirements

Applicants must be practising health professionals with full UK or Republic of Ireland professional registration, at least two years of post-qualification clinical experience, UK work rights and eligibility for home fees. Provisional and pre-registration applicants are ineligible. Medical graduates must be registered GPs or in an eligible training programme with the specified CCT time remaining; nurses, midwives and allied health professionals require a relevant master’s degree. Apply through the linked LSHTM vacancy ITD-CRD-2026-24 using the programme’s stage-one form and supporting documentation; do not upload a CV.
