NERC urgency funding: open

NERC supports urgent environmental research following an unexpected natural event when critical early data would otherwise be lost. Examples include exceptional floods, earthquakes and other unpredictable environmental changes; planned, seasonal or operational monitoring activities are outside scope. Applications are accepted at any time. Submit an outline within four weeks of the event starting, with evidence of that date; if invited, the full proposal is due within ten working days. Projects may last up to one year and have a full economic cost up to £100,000, normally funded at 80% by NERC. Full applications are submitted by the lead eligible UK research organisation through the UKRI Funding Service, following outline approval. The official call gives the outline submission route and complete eligibility rules.

Applicants must meet NERC individual eligibility criteria and be based at an eligible UK research organisation. The outline is required within four weeks of the unexpected natural event. A full proposal follows invitation and is submitted by the lead organisation. A project lead or co-lead involved in a NERC urgency application within the previous two years cannot submit another full application.
