Pushing the frontiers of environmental research

NERC invites ambitious, curiosity-driven environmental research with significant scope to advance knowledge. The opportunity supports novel approaches, interdisciplinary work and partnerships within NERC’s environmental-science remit. It is open with no closing date. Projects can request up to £950,000 full economic cost, normally funded at 80%; exceptional higher-cost proposals require prior NERC approval. Awards typically last three to four years, but the call sets no fixed duration limit. Eligible researchers apply through the lead UK research organisation using the UKRI Funding Service. Norway-based project co-leads may participate under the UK–Norway agreement; other international partnerships follow the call’s funding rules. Researchers at eligible UK NERC research organisations who meet the individual eligibility rules may apply. The lead research organisation submits the full application. Norway-based project co-leads are eligible under the UK–Norway agreement; other international partners generally fund their own involvement.
