About

A one-time call from the Simons Foundation's Mathematics and Physical Sciences division for established institutes and research centres to address AI challenges in mathematics. Funding supports workshops and initiatives that help researchers evaluate recent AI-assisted results against the standards of the mathematical community, learn and use new tools, share perspectives and shape collective standards for AI use. It does not provide primary operating support for an institute. Awards are up to $500,000 over two years (annual budgets around $250,000), inclusive of 20 percent indirect costs, starting between March 1 and June 1, 2027; up to five awards are expected and they are not renewable. The programme was created in partnership with Anthropic and OpenAI, which may each make additional awards through this call. Allowable costs include visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellows, research associates and graduate students, visitor travel, and conferences, workshops and summer schools.

Eligibility

Covers: Up to $500,000 USD over two years, inclusive of 20 percent indirect costs, for Math+AI workshops, visitors, postdoctoral and student salaries, meetings and related administration; no PI summer salary or scientific leadership salary.

U.S. and foreign institutes and research centres are eligible; institutions in China are not funded.
