About
The Atomic Scale Physics group led by Prof. Peter Liljeroth in Aalto University's Department of Applied Physics seeks a doctoral researcher in condensed matter physics working on gate-tunable two-dimensional quantum devices, under the guidance of Dr. Viliam Vaňo. The research studies correlated electron systems, topological systems and superconductivity by combining nanofabricated van der Waals devices with low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM): a gate voltage tunes a single sample through many quantum phases, which STM images at the atomic scale.
Tasks include cleanroom device fabrication (lithography, deposition, exfoliation and transfer of 2D materials), low-temperature STM experiments, collaboration with theoretical physicists, data analysis and writing articles. The position is initially filled for two years and continued for another two after a successful midterm review; the starting salary is about €3,142 per month (gross), and the selected candidate applies for doctoral study rights at the Aalto School of Science.
The application deadline is 30 November 2026.
Requirements
Master's degree in condensed matter physics or a closely related field; genuine interest in experimental condensed matter physics; good English (Finnish not required). Advantages: nanofabrication and cleanroom processing of 2D materials, low-temperature and ultra-high-vacuum systems, STM, knowledge of 2D quantum materials. Apply with a cover letter, CV with publications, degree certificates and transcripts, the Master's thesis (PDF or link) and recommendation letters or referee contacts.
