About

The Synthetic Quantum Materials Group in the Department of Physics at the University of Jyväskylä seeks a postdoctoral researcher for experimental research in nanoscience and quantum materials using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and advanced fabrication of two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. The group studies nanostructured quantum materials — topological systems, atomically thin 2D materials and engineered atomic-scale structures with emergent electronic and magnetic phenomena — with a focus on controlled fabrication, clean assembly and atomic-scale characterisation of heterostructures and graphene-based devices.

Instruments include a 1 K STM operating in magnetic fields up to 8 T and a 4 K STM integrated with optical spectroscopy for STM-induced luminescence and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with ångström-scale resolution. The postdoc fabricates and characterises heterostructures, performs ultrahigh-vacuum cryogenic STM measurements, operates and maintains the scanning probe systems and publishes the results. The position begins on 4 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter for one year, with possible extension up to three years, at demand level 5 with a starting salary of about €3,700–4,000 per month (gross).

Applications are due by 15 December 2026.

Requirements

PhD in condensed matter physics, materials science or a closely related field; required hands-on experience fabricating and characterising 2D van der Waals heterostructures, including transfer techniques and cleanroom microfabrication; low-temperature STM experience strongly preferred; a strong publication record and excellent communication skills.
