About

A two-year, full-time postdoctoral scholarship in the Discrete Mathematics group of the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, Umeå University, within the project "Saturation in graphs and hypergraphs". The scholar will work on problems in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics, studying saturation and weak saturation functions first for graphs and then for hypergraphs and other combinatorial structures, with freedom to explore related questions. The main supervisor is Maryam Sharifzadeh, with opportunities to collaborate with Victor Falgas-Ravry, Klas Markström and István Tomon. The scholarship is financed and administered by the Kempe Foundation and amounts to 750,000 SEK tax-free over two years (375,000 SEK per year). Start no later than 1 October 2027.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree by the time of the award decision. Priority goes to candidates whose doctorate was completed no more than three years before the application deadline; earlier degrees can be considered for special reasons such as illness, parental leave, union appointments, military service or clinical practice. The doctorate should be in discrete mathematics, with a strong background in combinatorics, basic probability, rigorous mathematical knowledge and fluent English; documented experience in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics is highly meritorious.
