Postdoctoral Positions in Computational Neuroscience & AI
Artificial Intelligence, Reinforcement Learning, Computational Neuroscience and full-time fixed-term postdoctoral positions (initially one year / extendable) at EPFL
About
The A. Mathis Group for Computational Neuroscience and AI (CNAI), led by Professor Alexander Mathis, is recruiting two postdoctoral fellows. The group studies how to measure and understand behaviour with AI, how brains and embodied agents learn to control the body, and how the brain builds a sense of the body through proprioception; it develops open-source tools such as DeepLabCut and trains biomechanically realistic embodied agents. Position 1 (computer vision and AI for behaviour analysis) covers behavioural datasets for animal groups, animal and environment reconstruction, behaviour understanding from multi-view video and audio, and multimodal large language models for action understanding.
Position 2 (embodied AI) trains muscle-actuated agents with reinforcement and imitation learning, develops full-body musculoskeletal control methods, and relates learned control policies to neural representations of movement with experimental labs. Fixed-term contracts at 100%, initially one year with possible extension, based at Campus Biotech, Geneva. Applications are processed as they arrive until the positions are filled.
Topics
- behaviour analysis
- embodied AI
- DeepLabCut
Requirements
PhD (completed or close to completion) in computer science, applied mathematics, computational neuroscience, robotics, physics or a closely related field; strong publication record; solid Python and modern deep-learning framework skills; excellent spoken and written English; commitment to open science. Position 1 favours computer vision, video understanding, action recognition, multimodal or vision-language models, pose estimation or self-supervised learning. Position 2 favours reinforcement or imitation learning, optimal control, dynamical systems and physics simulators such as MuJoCo. Submit through the EPFL website: motivation letter naming the position(s), CV with publication list, two relevant publications and email addresses for two or more referees.
