About

A joint appointment between the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago and Fermilab for a postdoctoral scholar in experimental dark matter physics focused on direct detection of axions and axion-like particles. The scholar works on instrumentation development and data analysis for two complementary searches: the Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX), a resonant-cavity haloscope, including analysis of ADMX Run 2A data and design, testing and implementation of detector upgrades; and the Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD), developing the receiver chain, low-noise detection and readout for a W-band (about 75–110 GHz) search.

The position starts in autumn 2026 with some flexibility, and the annual salary range is $63,480–$93,640 with the University of Chicago postdoctoral benefits package. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis through 1 January 2027; questions go to Prof. David W. Miller (UChicago) or Dr. Andrew Sonnenschein (Fermilab).

Requirements

PhD in physics, applied physics or a closely related field by the time of appointment, and within seven years of the PhD for the duration of the appointment; a research record appropriate to career stage. Preferred: low-noise microwave/RF and cryogenic systems, superconducting magnets, quantum sensing, low-noise amplification, and physics data analysis and publication; willingness to lead local hardware and software development and detector commissioning; readiness to travel to or spend extended periods at Fermilab and collaborating sites. Application: cover letter, CV, publication list, research statement and three letters of recommendation.
