Independent investigators at US nonprofit research institutions with at least three years in tenured or tenure-track faculty roles (by September 2023); every co-PI must qualify. Research-track, adjunct, visiting and instructor titles are excluded. Institutions without professorial titles need a senior official’s independence confirmation. After two unsuccessful consecutive applications, wait one year. Applicants cannot apply to both McKnight schemes in one cycle or repeat the same award; earlier recipients of another scheme must finish that funding first.

Eligible domestic and foreign organizations include higher education institutions, nonprofits, businesses and the government/community entity categories listed in the notice. PIs must have the skills, resources and knowledge to perform the work and apply with an eligible organization.

MD and/or PhD from 2023 onward, subject to documented interruption or clinical-training exceptions; obtain a Neuro supervisor’s agreement and support letter plus two sponsor assessments. Award-specific conditions apply.

CanNRT members enrolled at a Canadian university as master’s or doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers or clinical fellows when funding begins; research must concern neurodevelopment or associated conditions.

Senior scholars with a PhD and at least ten years of sustained research. This is not a postdoctoral programme.

At least one Swedish and one South African SASUF member university, plus a university in a listed SGCI country. Both national PIs need PhDs. One proposal per consortium and per PI; previous projects cannot simply be continued.

Host approval and eligible university, medical research, nonprofit or public health employment are required.

Only teams invited after the mandatory expression-of-interest stage may submit. The project lead must be employed by an eligible research organisation, direct the project and remain actively engaged. International researchers may participate as project co-leads under UKRI's international eligibility policy; businesses and third-sector organisations cannot lead but may participate as project partners.

The researcher must be a strategic recruitment priority for the host; applications are institutional rather than direct individual submissions.

Applicants must be based at a research organisation eligible for Medical Research Council funding and propose a high-risk development step for a medical product that builds on prior funded work.
