As part of its webinar series on region-specific diversity issues, the ALBA Network is organizing a panel discussion to explore the challenges and biases faced by neuroscientists while establishing their research groups and careers in the MENA region, from an academic and cultural perspective. This will be followed by highlights of success stories, unique region-specific opportunities for research collaborations and recommendations to improve representation of MENA neuroscientists in the global stage.

ALBA is organizing a special event on ‘Bias in Indian STEM’ at the online conference NeuroFemIndia 2021. Prof Shubha Tole (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research), ALBA Advisor, will be moderating and leading the discussion on biases in Indian STEM academia. The panel will discuss the main biases that women and minorities in India face as they navigate the academic system. This event is part of the NeuroFemIndia Online Conference 2021.

The ALBA Network and Black in Neuro are partnering to bring the Black neuroscientific community in Europe together. Are you a Black neuroscientist based in Europe? The possibilities of machine learning and neural networks in particular are ever expanding. With increased opportunities to do good, however there are just as many opportunities to do harm and even in the case that good intentions are at the helm, evidence suggests that opportunities for good may eventually prove to be the opposite. The greatest threat to what machine learning is able to achieve and to us as humans, is machine learning that does not reflect the diversity of the users it is meant to serve. It is important that we are not so pre-occupied with advancing technology into the future

Microbes make up the vast majority of the tree of life. While we know very little about most microbial species, large-scale sequencing is giving us glimpses of the diversity that exists both within species and in ecosystems. The challenge now is to find the patterns in this diversity and understand them. This session features provocative talks on attempts to meet that challenge.

Natural selection affects not only selected alleles, but also indirectly affects all genes near selected sites on the genome. An increasing body of evidence suggests that this linked selection is an important driver of evolutionary dynamics throughout the genomes of many species, implying that we need to substantially revise our basic understanding of molecular evolution. This session brings together early-career researchers working towards a quantitative understanding of the prevalence and effects of linked selection.
